Whitby is famous for so many things, but
what put Whitby on the map was the historical sailing of which
Captain James Cook ventured out to the seas and discovered the
big wide world out there.

Then we had the men going off to hunt and
bring back whales, of which you can still see to this day the
historical whale bones on the top of west cliff.

Whitby was always a busy fishing port,
and also in the days gone by was a very busy smugglers port along
with Robin Hoods Bay and Staithes to mention a few.
Then there was the famous film DRACULA
of which Bram stoker based the arrival of a black dog getting
off on the shores of Whitby, and running up along the 199 steps,
which lead up to the Abbey.

But now it's more famous for the films and
dramas that are filmed along the coast and countryside.
HEARTBEAT which is set just outside of Whitby in the village of
Goathland, but lots of scenes are filmed in the town itself.
HARRY POTTER the famous Hogworts steam train of which part of
this was filmed in Grosmont a little village 10 miles outside.
